The government of Burkino Faso has chosen Telecel Faso’s new subsidiary Bridge Fiber Solutions (BFS) to operate and maintain the country’s fibre optic backbone network.

Spanning 3000km and connecting nearly 100 municipalities across all 13 regions, Burkina Faso’s fibre optic network also has international links to neighbours Cote d’Ivoire, Mali and Niger. TeleGeography reports that BFS launched commercial operations on 10th March. At the firm’s launch ceremony, Minister of Digital Transition, Posts and Telecommunications Aminata Zerbo underlined the importance of infrastructure efficiency to its digital transition plans.

“The government has made a major investment by building this national backbone which makes it possible to mesh the entire territory with optical fibre in order to be able to provide businesses and public administration with a broadband connection, with the aim of accelerate this digitisation” said Zerbo. “By improving the electronic communication infrastructure, we are providing the means to ensure the economic competitiveness of our companies and to contribute to the performance of our defence and security forces in these particularly difficult times.”
