A province in the west of Argentina is about to receive a major boost to its fibre optic provision after the signing of a new contract.
Tecnored, a network-building company that has been a winner in the first phase of Argentina’s San Juan Conectada project to improve internet in the San Juan province, has signed a contract with provincial electricity regulator EPRE to deploy 500 kilometres of fibre optic lines in six areas of the province.
The project is expected to take eight or nine months. It will involve installing six sets of lines on posts carrying medium-voltage power lines. The new lines will be connected to the nodes of the federal fibre optic network known as Refefo, which is operated by Argentine government-owned telecommunications company ARSAT.
The province also plans to offer a new tender for lighting the fibre with active equipment and for the activation of fibre to the home (FTTH) in the fibre-enabled areas.
In a related development, according to the website BNamericas ARSAT and San Juan province signed a connectivity agreement in 2020 that will allow a form of infrastructure sharing involving the provision of 620 kilometres of fibre by San Juan and the lighting of those kilometres by ARSAT.
Some 24 nodes will be installed in towns and important tourist and economic areas in the province, all of which have very poor or no connectivity.
