European Investment Bank to fund digital initiative in Chad

Chad’s digital economy looks set for a boost following the approval by the European Investment Bank (EIB) of a range of new measures aimed at boosting the country’s development.

TeleGeography reports that the project will encompass three feasibility studies aimed at improving rural connectivity in Chad as well as delivering high speed broadband. Chad’s government is aiming to double the ICT sector’s contribution to the country’s economy.

Idriss Bachar Saleh, Chad’s Post and Digital Economy Minister, said: “A high-impact investment in digitisation is essential to boost future economic growth and social progress in landlocked Chad. The new cooperation with the EIB will allow Chad to benefit from technical expertise and best practices in the digital sector.”

The EIB announcement also revealed a new XAF6.5 billion (USD12 million) local business investment programme that will operate in partnership with Societe Generale.
