Philippines-based operator PLDT revealed it is in discussions with consortium partners to build another subsea cable with ambitions to increase international data capacity to 1Tbps in the next five years.
PLDT deputy network head Roderick Santiago told media the subsea cable plan will be solid by “early next year” as it focuses on other current projects, reported Inquirer.net. The operator is also part of projects to construct the Asia Direct Cable (ADC) and Apricot submarine cable systems, both are apparently on track to be operational on their target dates.
ADC will connect cities in Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand and China this year. Meanwhile, Apricot will connect Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, Taiwan and Guam in 2025, upon completion it will boost PLDT's international capacity to over 130Tbps.
The operator upgraded to 60Tbps after activating the US-Transpacific Jupiter cable system in July 2022, connecting municipalities Daet and Camarines Norte, and Japan. It is also building its 11th data centre and is scheduled for completion this year.
