Zain commits US$800m to Sudan upgrade

Kuwaiti operator group Zain pledged to invest US$800 million into its Sudanese unit over the next five years, with plans to deploy new and upgrade infrastructure to remain competitive in Sudan.

Ecofin Agency reported, the investment comes at a time of strong consumer demand for connectivity services and digital transformations across the country. This has spurred rivals to upgrade their own networks to launch new technologies.

The operator was also planning to provide digital services such as electronic banking to Sudan, which is already widespread across its footprint, reported Kuwait News Agency. 

MTN Group recently signed a partnership with US company LigaData to to accelerate the digital transformation of its operations in Sudan and penned a 10-year partnership with wireless infrastructure provider NuRAN Wireless to deploy 500 telecom sites in rural locations.
